Trump on Saturday stopped walking with Senate Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy after the California Democrat was hospitalized with a concussion after an apparent clash with the president.
The two lawmakers were seen at a campaign event together in New York, a state that Trump narrowly lost in the 2016 presidential election.
Trump said he was not surprised McCarthy was having difficulty walking because of his concussion and that he was glad McCarthy was okay.
“It was just a little bit of an awkward moment,” Trump said at a news conference at Trump Tower.
“But I think he’s doing well.
I just saw him today.”
McCarthy’s office issued a statement late Saturday saying that the two men were on their way to a campaign rally.
Trump tweeted that he and McCarthy had talked and that the pair were “getting along well.”
The president said McCarthy “didn’t want to leave” the event.
McCarthia was rushed to the hospital after being hit by a truck on Thursday, but his condition was upgraded to fair condition.
Trump and his aides had been in New Jersey for the Republican National Convention, where the two are expected to face off against each other on Saturday night.
McLaughlin and his wife, Susan, who is also the chief of staff to former President Barack Obama, are scheduled to attend.
The pair will join a group of former presidents who were at the convention.
